Nature: it Cures What Ails Ya

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves"-John Muir

Have you ever felt the need to 'get away from it all' or 'escape to peace'? Well I do. Frequently actually. Nature is my refuge. It is the pulsating, living world that envelops me. It's the place I can get lost and dream of dreams I didn't know existed. The world is wide open and ready to be explored, and when the world seems to be caving in around me, the woods are my solitude and my solace. The electrifying quiet and the heaving breath of the hills, these are the places I let myself release.

Our family has a love of nature that is poetic. We find joy in the art of nature, the peace of it, the sanctity of the hills and woods. These glories that God has provided for us. God is the master artist, no other has come after Him without copying His great masterpieces. I am in awe of the nature surrounding me, from the dew dripped flowers to the wind whipped trees, to the symphony of sounds.

My family frequents the hills around our home. Sadly we have to drive where we want to hike and explore. If only I could step out into a great wood with babbling brook just out my back door, wouldn't that be glorious! But alas, we do what we can with the blessings we have been given.

We spend hours hiking and fishing, painting and drawing in our nature journals, camping, and kayaking and exploring. One of the ways we are truly blessed is to have the opportunity to escape to a family lake in Minnesota. There we relax and play on the water for days on end. The ebb and flow of the lakes waves hypnotize my kids and they play in the waters' playground for hours. They could escape to the water all day without thought of hunger or thirst. They are mystified by the serenity and playfulness the water offers.

For my husband and I, the lake is a place to forget about reality. It's an escape from job pressures, planning, and grown up things. We can enjoy the water with our children, or reconnect our marriage while relaxing in the sun. Either way, this and other nature outings are necessary to the health of my family. We return home feeling renewed, refreshed and reenergized. The awakening of all our senses is just what the doctor ordered.

Have you had your nature today?
